Mastering

Wave Editor 1.4 fully supports Red Book CD burning and DDP (Disc Description Protocol) 2.0 export. Wave Editor utilizes a visual workflow to create CD masters. The process is quite simple:

  1. Import tracks as Layers
  2. Arrange tracks
  3. Apply effects and fades
  4. Add Track and Index Labels
  5. Enter metadata in the Labels Drawer and Properties panel
  6. Convert sample rate (if required) and apply dither (if desired)
  7. Burn a disc and/or export a DDP fileset

Import Tracks

Choose File > Open... and choose tracks in the dialog. Select "Consecutive layers in a new document" in the "Open multiple documents as" pop-up menu.

Arrange Tracks

Select a Layer in the Layers Drawer, press the Shift and Command keys, then drag the waveform left or right.

Apply Effects & Fades

Applying Audio Units to Layers is covered in the Effects Plug-Ins chapter.

To apply an Audio Unit to a Layer, select a Layer in the Layers Drawer and then choose Layer > Add Audio Unit. To apply an Audio Unit to the entire master, add it to the Master Layer.

Applying Fades to Layers is covered in the Fades chapter.

You can utilize Bezier Fades or SmartEdit fades, depending on your needs. Bezier Fades provide tighter control over your fades than SmartEdits. SmartEdits are covered extensively in the SmartEdits chapter.

To add a Bezier Fade, make a selection on the current Layer and choose Layer > Add Fade.

Add Track & Index Labels

To add a Track or Index to your master, choose the appropriate Label from the Label Well in the upper right of the Waveform Bar, then drag the Label onto the waveform.

Here is a quick way to add Tracks Labels to your master:

  1. Choose View > Autoselect > Layers
  2. Select a Layer in the Layers Drawer
  3. Choose Label > Add Label > Track

A Track Label will be added at the start and end of the selected Layer.

Enter Metadata

Metadata that is specific to a Track or Index is displayed in the split pane at the bottom of the Labels Drawer. To edit metadata for a Track or Index, select a Label in the Labels Drawer and double-click the metadata filed you wish to edit in the split pane. Enter the metadata and press the Return key. To view the Labels Drawer, choose View > Labels.

Metadata that is global for a CD master or DDP fileset is displayed in the Properties panel. To open the Properties panel, choose Window > Properties. There are three predefined filters for audio CD metadata. To choose a filter, select it in the pop-up menu at the top of the Properties panel. To edit a property, select it in the list and enter metadata in the pane at the below the list. The Properties panel is covered extensively in the Properties chapter.

Convert Sample Rate & Apply Dither

Use the Processor to convert the sample rate of your master. To open the Processor, choose Window > Processor. Choose "Convert Sample Rate" from the pop-up menu at the top of the Processor. Choose "44100" in the "Sample Rate" pop-up and choose the a converter. We highly recommend using the industry-best iZotope 64-bit SRC. To configure advanced options for the iZotope 64-bit SRC, click the disclosure triangle at the bottom of the panel and adjust the sliders as desired. Click the "Process" button when you are ready to apply the final sample rate conversion.

You are NOT required to convert the sample rate before you burn a disc or export a DDP fileset. If you do not, Wave Editor will automatically convert it when it burns or exports utilizing the iZotope 64-bit SRC with default settings.

If the bit-depth (also called word-length) is higher than 16-bit, it is recommend that you apply dither. To apply dither, choose "Dither" from the pop-up menu at the top of the Processor, then choose "16-bit" in the "Range" pop-up menu and choose a type in the "Type" pop-up menu. We highly recommend using iZotope's industry-leading MBIT+ Dither as it is one of the highest quality noise-shaping dithering algorithms available. To configure advanced options for Type I/II or MBIT+, click the disclosure triangle at the bottom of the panel and configure options. Click the "Process" when you are ready to apply dither.

This DOES NOT convert the bit-depth of the file, it ONLY applies dither. Wave Editor will automatically convert the bit-depth when you burn a disc or export a DDP fileset.

If you do not wish to apply dither to your master file, you can choose to add dither in the Burn Disc dialog or the DDP Export dialog (see next section). Advanced options are not currently available in the dialogs, but will be in a future update.

Note

For detailed information on MBIT+, please download iZotope's comprehenstive dithering guide.

Burn A Disc & Export A DDP Fileset

When your master is complete, you can burn a disc or export a DDP fileset.

Note

For more information about the Red Book CD standard and DDP, visit our website.

To burn a disc, choose File > Burn Disc and choose your desired burn speed, then click the "Burn" button. If you did not previously apply dither and the bit-depth of your document is greater than 16-bit, choose a dither type in the "Dither" pop-up menu. We highly recommend MBIT+. Dither will be applied using default settings.

To export a DDP 2.0 fileset, choose File > Export > DDP... and choose a location for your fileset. Next, choose a dither type from the "Dither" pop-menu and then click the "Save" button.

If you have applied effects such as reverbs or delays, select "Latency Compensation" in the Burn Disc and Export DDP dialogs.

Note

When burning a CD and/or exporting to DDP Wave Editor will automatically add a two second silence prior to the first track.
