Labels

A Label is a collective term used to describe items such as Slices, Loops and Regions, all of which are common in many audio file formats. There are 8 types of Labels in Wave Editor:

Markers, Slices, Indexes, Cues and Chapters are considered "position" Labels as they define a single position. Regions, Loops and Tracks are called "range" Labels as they define ranges of audio.

Label Glossary

Marker

Markers are supported in almost all audio file formats. Markers are displayed in green and can have names.

Slice

Slices are more commonly found in files such as ReCycle, ACID and Apple Loops. Most other file formats do not retain or recognize Slice Labels. Slices are displayed in orange.

Index

Indexes are used specifically in Red Book-compliant CD masters for defining a specific point within a Track. Indexes are displayed in black/yellow.

Cues

Cues are used in XML files for Flash. Cues are displayed in magenta.

Chapters

Chapter labels are used in Podcasts. They are included with the exported Podcast file (File > Export > Podcast...). They are displayed in cyan.

Region

Regions are most commonly found in Sound Designer II files. WAVE files also support regions, AIFF files do not. Regions are displayed in red and can have names.

Loop

A Loop describes a range in an audio file that is repeated in several different ways. A file can contain many Loops, but only one can be used at a time. Loops are supported in almost all audio file formats. Loops are displayed in blue. Wave Editor also integrates with our Loop Editor application which is a great tool for editing Loops and producing looped files.

Track

A Track describes a range in an audio file that is a track in a Red Book-compliant CD master. Tracks are displayed in black/yellow.

Working With Labels

A Wave Editor document can contain an unlimited number of Labels. To add a Label, make an insertion point or selection in the waveform view and choose Label > Add Label. Alternatively, you can use the Label Well at the upper right of the Waveform Bar. To add a Label this way, select a Label type from the pop-up menu under the Label Well, then click and drag the Label from the Label Well onto the waveform.

To remove a Label, select it in the Labels Drawer and choose Edit > Remove or Control/right-click on a Label head or on a Label in the Labels drawer and choose "Remove" from the contextual menu.

Labels can be locked so they cannot be accidentally moved or removed. To lock or unlock a Label, click in the "lock" column next to the Label in the Labels Drawer. Alternatively, you can Control/right-click on the Label head or on the Label in the Labels Drawer and choose "Locked" from the contextual menu.

To move a Label, click on the Label head and drag it to a new location or double-click on the "Position" and/or "End" values next to the Label in the Labels drawer and enter a new value.

Labels can be converted from one type to the other. To convert a Label, select in the Labels drawer and choose Label > Convert To and choose a new Label. Alternatively, you can Control/right-click on a Label in the Labels Drawer and choose "Convert Label" from the contextual menu.

Labels can be quantized. Quantizing a Label moves it to the nearest zero cross, time unit or grid line. To quantize a Label, select it in the Labels drawer and then choose Label > Quantize To. Or, Control/right-click on a Label in the Labels Drawer and choose "Quantize To" from the contextual menu.

Range Labels

Labels that define ranges (Regions, Loops and Tracks) can be combined in special ways.

"Join" combines the selected Labels into a single Label spanning from the start point of the first Label to the end point of the last. To join Labels, select multiple Regions, Loops, or Tracks in the Labels Drawer and choose Label > Join or Control/right-click on the selected Labels and choose "Join" from the contextual menu.

"Intersect" applies to only two overlapping Regions, Loops or Tracks. It combines the selected Labels into a single Label where the two original Labels overlap. To interesect Labels, select two overlapping Regions, Loops, or Tracks in the Labels Drawer and choose Label > Intersect or Control/right-click on the selected Labels and choose "Intersect" from the contextual menu.

"Justify" applies only to non-overlapping Regions, Loops or Tracks. It moves a Label's end point to the next Label's start point. To justify Labels, select multiple Regions, Loops, or Tracks in the Labels Drawer and choose Label > Justify or Control/right-click on the selected Labels and choose "Justify" from the contextual menu.

Export Labels and Cues

You can export Labels from a document and save the Label data as an XML file. This file can be imported into other Wave Editor documents including AIFF, WAVE and native Wave Editor format. To export Labels, choose File > Export > Labels... and choose a location for the file. You can export Labels from a specific Layer in a multi-Layer document or all Labels.

You can export Cue labels separately as an XML file. Cue labels are used for the Flash Video Encoder.

Extracting Audio From Labels

You can extract audio defined by Labels in a document. To extract audio from Labels:

  1. Select the Labels you wish to extract in the Labels Drawer. Only one type of Label may be extracted at a time.
  2. Choose File > Save Selection To...
  3. Choose a location and format for the files.

When extracting audio from Regions, Loops, Tracks, Cues, or Chapters the area between the selected Labels are saved as separate files with a given name and appended number. When extracting audio between Markers, Slices, or Indexes the area between each Label is saved as a separate file with a given and appended number. Also note that when extracting Markers, Slices, Indexes, Cues or Chapters Wave Editor will create a file from the start of the file to the first Label as well as one from the last Label to the end of the file.
