microphones and dock connector

Is anyone aware of higher quality microphone options coming for iPhone? The FiRe app makes it feasible for the iPhone to be an excellent stereo recorder, but the microphones currently compatible with iPhone are limited in sound quality. I understand that the dock connector was only opened up to developers recently, so perhaps there's more in the works. The Blue, Logitec, and other mics available now don't seem to take advantage of the audio quality that the iPhone is capable of. I'd love to use iPhone as platform for binaural or stereo ambient or music recordings, with a high quality pair of lavalier type mics, and keep the entire system pocketable.

I think we all want that.
The dock connector is line level only, so you would need a mic pre, but like you, I'm a bit surprised that there isn't anything on the market yet as a high quality (dock connector can do 48Khz) mic pre.
Matthew from Audiofile Engineering has hinted that they are on to something in that area, but understandably, the details are scarce.
I just hope that whatever is out there will have a low profile connector so the iPod/iPhone and external pre/mic combination can be mounted on body for use in film/TV. (bring on external sync!!).

Add me to the list of people who really want this too. I've been so close to getting a Mikey for months now, but I'm just not convinced it's going to have the quality I want. Bought a Edirol r09HR instead, but I never had it with me when I got inspired to grab something

Relevant to the topic of higher quality audio into iPhone, has anyone else noticed brief audio static hiss associated with (I think) iPhone system controls on audio? I hear what sounds like a slight static discharge for about 5-10 seconds after opening audio apps, Pause audio, or Stop audio, even in the iPod app on my iPhone 3Gs. Clean silence follows the 5-10 second static hiss. Level is sensitive to volume control. Don't hear it during audio play itself, just following audio commands, although at a level you could only possibly hear during program silences. Still present in Airplane mode (turning off WiFi and cellular).
Seems like a system software issue rather than hardware. I am still at system 3.0.1---has this perhaps been fixed in 3.1?
