Feature requests: monitoring and level control

The two features that would make FiRe even more useful for me are:

1. Live audio preview on the headphones to monitor the audio while recording.
2. The ability to easily adjust the recording level manually while recording and to disable any AGC.

These two features would make it possible to replace an audio field-recorder for film projects. We'll be trying it out on a short film this weekend, syncing with footage on a 35 mm camera.

Playthrough is coming in version 1.2 and should be great for those using overdub! 1.1 is just about qualified and will be submitted to the app store the week of 5/4/09. Version 1.2 should be submitted by late May.

Version 1.1 will support gain increase. Developers do not have access to the internal mic, so we cannot lower the input gain. If this is a requirement, I'd suggest the Alesis ProTrack. Also, we have some exciting announcements coming on the mic front!

We plan on supporting external syncing by the end of the year.

I was trying FiRe on may way to work today. Totally looking forward to playthrough, as this makes it even more enjoyable! And, in combination with overdub, opens great new possibilities. I always liked the idea of recording a certain trip, or path. On the next day and same trip, listening to the recording of the day before, blending together two different experiences of the same places. Overdub and playthrough could take this to a whole new level.

Speaking of trips, another thing I was thinking (I asked about the geo tags earlier in this forum, but the following does not take technical aspects or limitations into account). Instead of "just" adding a single, static geo tag to a recording, it would be great if it would be possible to write location data to the file with every marker that is being set automatically on a time grid (eg every 30 sec) or by tapping the button. When further using the material, it would be possible to do whole new interpretations, mappings, visualization of the trip in combination with the recorded sound. To say it in a basic Google Maps example: drawing lines on a map, with certain anchorpoints to skip the audiofile location. Or in combination with "street view"? That could lead to very interesting and odd things and pretty shifted perception :-)

Another thing, I have no idea if this would be possible: I recorded my way to work with the iPhone headset microphone (wanted to test it – worked OK, although there seems to be some strange hiss noise here and there, mainly when the signal is pretty busy). Would be great if it would be possible to pause the recording with the remote control of the headset (and write a marker by doing so). But I assume it is not possible, since pushing the button on the remote control quits FiRe and launches the iPod app, so this seems to be "hardwired". Probably somehting that is going to change with the next generation of the iPhone and its OS 3.0?

Thanks a lot. I'm very excited.

We just talked last week about adding information like location data to markers as well as the whole file. We just might do it!

And, yes, you are correct. We have no ability to access the headset for such a use case (though we might be able to develop a Bluetooth remote).

Not yet. We're working on getting 1.3 out the door at the moment. It's definitely on our radar though.

Any idea what format or how the sync will work?
